All-in-all it was a fun project for an incredible film.

This past weekend I realized that it was around this time a few years ago that my friend Sarah Habibi contacted me about a project for an upcoming release from The Criterion Collection. Out of that mess of desperation one cover struck a nerve. It was a scribble of charcoal that I made, photographed and put type over. I juxtaposed images from the film with big, bold typography and chose a rounded typeface to make it feel more human and accessible.

I actually really liked these covers and for a moment I had hoped that they would be approved, Lorazepam class. I liked the colors and I was still really hung up on those images. Yuri knows her way around a sewing machine and helped me to sew together a version of the divided map seen in the film. The flag itself actually belonged to a friend of mine named Jim from back home in Nebraska. The final change was the ditch the strong yellow in favor of a more reverent silver color. But it was deemed to distracting and placed too much emphasis on the Criterion branding. It was Sarah’s call and, ultimately, a good one.

It was a long road, but by the end of the project I was so proud of the work that we had done. Sometimes the first thing you create is the best. It springs out of some past experience or combines a few things to create something new. Sometimes, however, you really have to work at it and for me, the key to working at it is having the courage to experiment, the support of your collaborators and a willingness to persevere.
